Hey! Pay attention to us!
April 25, 2007 |
According to Gallup, a sizable majority of Americans (68%) believe the federal government pays too little attention to small business owners.
That puts us in the middle of a rather interesting group of folks being ignored by the government when we should be, a group that includes veterans (81%), the poor (77%) and senior citizens (66%).
At the other end of the spectrum, the group that the largest majorities of Americans say the federal government pays too much attention to includes big corporations (76%) and Hollywood movie executives (74%).
The finding about small businesses is intriguing to me. If you judge people by what you see in the media, then you wind up assuming that the American people could care less about small businesses. A poll like this makes me wonder if maybe folks are more aware of the universe of small businesses than I thought, and the folks who could care less about small businesses are just the media … and the politicians, of course.
It also makes me wonder if this finding has anything to do with the fact that there are so many more people engaging in independent economic activity than there used to be. Then, too, small businesses are still employing almost half the workforce. They makes themselves more pervasively felt than you might expect.
In any event, it’s nice to know that even though the politicians don’t get it, the American public seems to.
