Preaching microbusiness up and down the east coast
April 25, 2008 |
Hey there, hi there, ho there! It’s Friday and, early and all as it is, I’m already punchy. Ah, well …
I probably should have mentioned this before now but I’m in Maryland, about to go give a presentation to a passel of community and economic development types about microbusinesses, what they’re all about and why they matter.
Let us just say it’s a topic after my own heart.
This is an interesting area. It appears to be thriving economically, although half the workforce works outside the county in the nearby cities of Baltimore, Philadelphia and Wilmington. Local officials want more jobs created within the county (although there is something to be said for bring money from outside the county to inside the county) and, with gas prices doing what they’re doing, citizens in the community are starting to agree much more strongly.
Of course, like most economic development people, the folks here have their heads firmly stuck in about the middle of the last century. My mission, which I have already chosen to accept, is to introduce them to the concept of now.
Wish me luck.
If possible, I’ll check back in here later and tell you how it went.
Oh, and one other thing … since my here and my hard drive is back there, I have no Friday Musical Interlude for you this week. Gomen!
