Un-marketing marketing

I happen to be acquainted with a couple of online retailers who have trouble with sales. Whenever they decide to have one, nobody takes advantage of it. In fact, one of them jokes in his newsletter about how his regular customers wait until a sale is over before they return to his site to pay regular prices for his merchandise.

He even tried a "This Is Not A Sale" sale. No dice. They all still waited till the sale was over so they could have the privilege of paying full price. Go figure.

I thought of them when I read this and wondered if it would work for them. You may want to give it a try, too ... complete with the technique of dispensing with the bells and whistles. Very clever stuff and goes to show that an important part of marketing is a more-than-passing acquaintenance with human psychology.

At least people were buying. It would have been worse if it was a "going out of business" sale and they still could not dump the inventory.
