Know your subject

You know, sometimes, I have very mixed feelings about how the press covers small businesses.

On the one hand, to a degree, it's good to see small businesses being covered at all. On the other hand, some of the things they write seem to me to be so clueless that I get alarmed.

Consider this, from an article in the New York Times (registration required): "Complaints about complying with workplace laws resulted in an advocacy office being set up by the Small Business Administration, which makes sure small-business concerns are considered when regulations are devised."

Now, maybe I'm crazy, but that makes it sound like the Office of Advocacy is something new, instead of being a part of the SBA that's been there for almost 30 years.

Not too long ago, a fellow journalist lamented the number of reporters who write about subjects they know nothing about. I second that lament.
