Peculiar political about-face

The Washington Post opens its article on the subject with this:

The clash over the secret domestic spying program is one slice of a broader struggle over the power of the presidency that has animated the Bush administration.

I find it fascinating that the party of less government has produced this President who wants to insert the government into every single nook and crany of the life of the individual citizen. What is even more fascinating is that Congressional Republicans are inclined to go along with him, in spite of the degree to which his actions fly in the face of longstanding party philosophy.

The same article quotes Dick Cheney as saying, "I believe in a strong, robust executive authority ... ."

I'm sure George III would have agreed, but history teaches us that Thomas Jefferson did not. Checks and balances, fellas. Checks and balances.
