Whose noses do they count?
There are two online retailers in my house and, whenever I want to watch their hair catch fire, I just mention the latest data on e-commerce from one source or another.
For example, ClickZ reported this week that weekly holiday online shopping sessions were way up, by 33% over last year's numbers, according to Neilson/NetRatings. In addition, for week six of the current season, "[b]ooks, music, and video combined are the fastest growing category, with a 238 percent increase over last year."
I mention the category because that's the category that my in-house retailers here also occupy.
They are firmly of the opinion that Neilson does not survey online micro-retailers for these things and they may well be right. According to their press release, they have "100 representative online retailers across ten categories" that they canvas to get their numbers. My guys here say that these kinds of e-commerce holiday sales numbers tell us more about how Amazon.com is doing than they tell us about how online microbusinesses are doing.
What do you think? How are your sales doing this holiday season so far?
